Implications of Large - Scale Habitat Fragmentation
نویسنده
چکیده
The field of landscape ecology is an emerging complex area of study encompassing numerous concepts and principles. Landscapes are intricate systems and must remain balanced if ecosystem collapse is to be avoided. However, habitat fragmentation in landscapes of differing characteristics is threatening to upset such interconnectedness. It is the purpose of this investigation to explore the theory behind habitat fragmentation, the focus of current literature on the issue, and management and monitoring implications.

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on Biodiversity
■ Abstract The literature on effects of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity is huge. It is also very diverse, with different authors measuring fragmentation in different ways and, as a consequence, drawing different conclusions regarding both the magnitude and direction of its effects. Habitat fragmentation is usually defined as a landscape-scale process involving both habitat loss and the br...
متن کاملEffects of habitat loss and fragmentation on amphibians: A review and prospectus
Habitat loss and fragmentation are among the largest threats to amphibian populations. However, most studies have not provided clear insights into their population-level implications. There is a critical need to investigate the mechanisms that underlie patterns of distributionandabundance. Inorder tounderstand thepopulationandspecies-level implications of habitat loss and fragmentation, it is n...
متن کاملFragmented nature: consequences for biodiversity
We discuss how fragmentation of resources and habitat operate differently on species diversity across spatial scales, ranging from positive effects on local species coexistence to negative effect on intermediate spatial scales, to again positive effects on large spatial and temporal scales. Species with different size and mobility can be regulated by different processes at the same spatial scal...

Large scale land use/cover changes and habitat fragmentation have been associated with the decline of many wildlife populations in ecological sensitive regions. The main goal of this study was to quantify the spatial pattern changes in Caucasian Black Grouse habitat in Arasbaran Biosphere Reserve, Northwest of Iran in a period of 24 years (1987–2011). Caucasian black grouse (Tetrao mlokosiewicz...
متن کاملLandscape size affects the relative importance of habitat amount, habitat fragmentation, and matrix quality on forest birds
It is important to understand the relative effects of landscape habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and matrix quality on biodiversity, so that potential management options can be appropriately ranked. However, their effects and relative importance may change with the size of the landscape considered because the multiple (and potentially conflicting) ecological processes that are influenced by...
